How To Secure Wifi Network
Securing your WiFi network is a necessary step to prevent a malicious user to use your wireless connection. Here are the steps to follow.
Change the user password of your wireless router
Accessing the configuration utility of your router is secured with a username and a password. This page is accessible by entering the IP address of your router in your browser (eg 192.168.1.1). The first step to secure your new Wi-Fi is therefore to change the password by going to the option to change it.
Set your network name (SSID)
All Wi-Fi network has a name: the SSID (Service Set IDentifier). The second step is to change the name and hide at the sight of malicious users. In the configuration utility for your router, change the default SSID name, avoiding either too simple.Then Disable the SSID broadcast of your wireless network by checking the appropriate box, it should not appear in the list of possible connections to your neighbors.
Enable encryption on your network (security key)
Before using your wireless network-son, it will be useful to encrypt it with a numerical key to not let users access only to have it. Two types of encoding data currently exist: WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). If your router and your wireless adapters support it, son, we recommend you opt for WPA with a key encryption key "pre-shared". However, if your equipment does not support WPA, then enable WEP. Handling is simple because the digital encryption is created from a phrase you must enter a password at least 5 letters or words in the boxes and the router will generate different code. Remember to write down (one is enough) because they will be used to connect each computer on the network.
Filter MAC addresses
Devices (PC or PDA) connected to a wireless network and son have a network card fitted to a specific address: MAC address (irrespective of this, a computer is defined by his IP address). In the configuration utility of your router, you must activate the filter option and enter the MAC addresses of each device. Thus only these devices (known on the network by their MAC address) can access the network.
Configure wireless machinesFor each machine can connect to the network you must specify the information listed above. After researching your wireless-son, you must change the SSID to match the one you specified for the router. Then enter the digital encryption key that was specified in the utility ocnfiguration router. Once done, your device should connect to the router and the Internet.
Enable File Sharing
To share files between computers and peripherals connected to WiFi, you must enable file sharing. The sharing process is simple in Windows XP. Choose "Control Panel", then "Network Connections" and click on "Create a home network or a corporate network. Select "This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my home network or via a residential gateway. The connection wizard will detect your connection to the Internet.
To share a folder with Windows XP, right click on the file in question, then select "Sharing and Security" and tick the option "Share this folder". To then access to all shared folders from any machine on the network, click "Start" then "Favorites Network. The technique is similar to put a printer on a network: on the computer that the printer is directly connected, go to the Start menu, then "Printers and Faxes" then right-click on the printer and installed select "Share".
