I need serious help in some English?
I have a big task, because at the end of the week in English, and has to be about Edgar Allan Poe. Some You may have heard of a multi-genre report, which is gathering a lot of information and putting in all the different types of things modern technology, or I suppose it could also be old technology. but anyway one night I have to compsoe gender and I have no information to left for work. I need some places to continue, or anything that I can access this night. Thanks, much appreciated
Poe and Religion http://www.eapoe.org/geninfo/poerelig.htm A common, almost automatic, Poe hypothesis is that he was an atheist irredeemable. As in many other aspects of Poe's life, however, the truth is far less simplistic. Unfortunately, nowhere in the writings of Poe, we find a clear and definitive statement of his position on this issue. (Nor, perhaps, we should expect one.) We are therefore left to divine for ourselves. Those who knew Poe and rushed to remember what no religion, as Griswold and RW Hopkins JH, were often very zealous in their views. effusive enthusiasm can raise the sense of Poe, otherwise. Poe liked to shock or surprise, and probably only something that effect. Others take its position based on negative evidence that there is no moral preaching openly and relatively little mention of religion in his writings. Some have suggested, rather dramatically, that the only god of Poe was the art. Poe raising in this regard seems to have been fairly typical of his time. By all accounts, Francis Allan, Poe's foster mother was a pious and deeply religious woman. John Allan, although apparently less religious than his wife, strongly adhered to the Christian virtues such as hard work, honesty and frugality, although one might question the depth of his sense of charity or forgiveness. When the Monumental Episcopal Church was built in 1814, John Allan purchased bank number 80 for $ 340 (registration Poe, p. 21). Edgar Francisco and regularly attended services there. John Allan, raised as a Presbyterian Scotland, may have visited occasionally, if only to maintain business contacts in the community. One of the surviving artifacts of Moldova, an elegant mansion John Allan of Richmond, is a large painting of the "holy family", a full crib with cherubim and seraphim. At least one illegitimate child, of which Allan accepted at least part of the financial obligations, according to a personal weakness that clearly goes against the teachings of the church. Beware, however, rush to use this ruling to deny any possibility that Allan sincerely believe in God or morality. Even the best intentions sometimes fail to control our actions, a theme Poe is enshrined in several stories, especially "The Black Cat" and "The Imp of the Perverse." Details Poe's personal exposure to religion are scarce, but convincing. Not quite three years, Edgar was baptized January 7, 1812 by Rev. John Buchanan, John and Frances Allan as their sponsors. (This event is source appears as Allan Poe's middle name.) Although no actual record exists, A Mabbott felt that Poe was probably confirmed Monumental Episcopal Church by Bishop Richard Channing Moore (Mabbott, Poems, 1969, p. 536). Also remember the dominant role of Christianity in the United States in the nineteenth century, especially before the theory Darwin's evolution and the unspeakable horrors of the Civil War. It would have been almost impossible to avoid being bathed in a general consensus on the existence of God and the importance of religion. No wonder that one of the themes of Poe was taught in London schools Misses Dubourg was the Catechism of the Church of England (registration Poe, p. 10). That also gave religious lessons in the school of Reverend Bransby seems obvious. Poe's description of school life in "William Wilson" as Poe's own admission, based loosely on his own school days in Bransby School Manor House, suggests that morning was compulsory and all evening services Sundays. As an adult, Poe involvement with organized religion is more uncertain. To get out of West Point, Poe refused to attend classes or church services, clearly indicates that in the months before, had gone to both. When Poe married Virginia on May 16, 1836, their votes were given by the Reverend Amasa Convers, a Presbyterian minister. At Fordham, New York, Poe often played cards with the Jesuits who lived nearby. The letter from Rev. JH Hopkins to Mrs. Shew, Poe quoted (probably in 1848) as saying: "They were very cultivated gentlemen and scholars ... smoked, drank and played cards like gentlemen, and never said a word about religion "(John Henry Hopkins with Marie Louise Shew, February 9, 1875, Ingram collection, item 201, reprinted in Miller, Building Poe Biography, p. 101). It should be noted, of course, Hopkins Poe and intensely disliked each other for personal reasons. Poe apparently went to church with Mrs. Shew in New York in 1848. In fact, The most telling comment we have is one of Poe's letters to Mrs. Shew. "How I can believe in Providence when you look coldly upon me, not you you who renewed my hope and faith in God? . . . Why I was not a priest is a mystery, because I feel that now I am a prophet. . . "(Marie Louise Poe Shew, June 1848, Ostrom, Letters, p. 373). To Thomas Holley Chivers, Poe wrote: "My faith is in fact mine. You will find out a little detail in a forthcoming number of "Revista Colombiana" (Poe to Chivers, July 10, 1844). Poe small Bible, which gave Mrs. Clemm in 1846, is presumed to have been a books in the trunk when he died. (The Bible, formerly part of the collection of the Bronx Historical Society in New York, now seems lost. Phillips, 1:847 2:1546, and states that one of the passages marked, presumably by Poe, was the Lord's Prayer. Another, equally marked, Job vii, 16: "I refuse, I do not going to live every day, let me alone, because my days are vanity. ") Another book Poe property presumably because it contains some notes written in his own hand is the 1833 edition of the Rev. Thomas Chalmers in the goodness Power, Wisdom, and God, as manifested in the adaptation of external nature to the moral and intellectual Constitution of Man, Philadelphia: Carey Lea, and Blanchard. As the date of publication of this book several years earlier in Poe's career as a writer of criticism, it can be assumed to read it for personal reasons and not merely professional. (This book is now in the collection Poe at the University of Texas at Austin.) What clues found in Poe's own writings? There are brief references to religion in letters and in "Marginalia", but while most typical of an atheist, these phrases may be little more than clichés or figures of speech. best, are rather vague and open to multiple interpretations. Two examples are sufficient for our purposes. "After reading all that has been written, and after thinking about everything you can think about the issues of God and the soul, the man who has the right to say that he thinks in all, will come face to face with the conclusion that, on these issues, the deepest thought is what can be less easily distinguished from the feeling superficial "(" Marginalia, "Graham, February 1848, reprinted in Pollin, Brevities, p. 330M199)." A strong argument for religion Christ is this - that crimes against Charity are the only men to their death-beds can be made - not understand - but to feel - as a crime "(" Marginalia ". SLM, July 1849, reprinted in Pollin, Brevities, p. 399M263) Perhaps most importantly, Poe wrote a" Hymn [to Mary] " (1833) as part of "Morella." Removed from later versions of the story was included, however, as "Catholic Hymn" in The Raven and other Poems (1845). Another poem, "For Annie" (March 23, 1849) begins with "Thank God!" and includes a reference to "... prayed to the angels ... For the Queen of angels ... "(Mabbott notes that the Virgin Mary is known as the Queen of Angels, Mabbott, Poems, 1969, p. 461). As noted often, Poe knew the Bible and, at least in the literature. Mabbott Forrest and contain long lists of Bible quotes and much more numerous allusions. This occurs in some of poems and many stories. Has also been argued that, contrary to popular opinion, there is a strong sense of morality behind the works of Poe. Here Be careful not to confuse the opinions of Poe's fictional characters (including the narrators) with those of Poe himself. The narrator who has killed the old man in "The Heart informer 'challenging defending against the idea that is crazy. Poe, however, clearly wants us to understand that the character is crazy, though - and partly because a - their protests. He can not feel the old man's death was wrong, but it certainly should. That's not going to be hanged in the morning suggests that justice is done. In The Barrel amontillado "Montressor carefully planned and executed a terrible revenge on the unsuspecting Fortunato for crimes that are conspicuous by their absence in the story. It would be difficult Fortunato imagine what could have done to deserve such treatment Montressor and yet be completely unaware of the danger of being alone with him in an isolated place. A series interpretations have been applied to history. Montressor is counting, probably from his deathbed his crime, for fifty years to a person without a name, perhaps a clergyman or priest. Some detect a sense of arrogance in his tone, while others claim it as a confession. The final words: "In pace requiescat" many readers have suggested that Fortunato has rested in peace, while Montressor has been tormented by guilt. In any case, Poe almost surely did not expect us to identify with Montressor. If we did, where would the horror of the story? If the meaning of Poe, morality sometimes seems out of balance, should be in the "Hop Frog." In this story less well known, the treatment is the king of the young is patently false, but does not justify being burned alive with his eight ministers of state. Maybe not the specific act, but the habitual abuse of power that is being punished there. No survey of Poe and religion would be reasonably complete without some mention of his working majority remarkable and spiritual, though esoteric - the prose poem Eureka (1848). There, Poe detailed trust the essence of life itself, the very soul of existence. Poe considered Eureka, a conference first, then a small book was the culmination of his career. "I have no desire to live since I've done 'Eureka'. I could accomplish nothing more "(Poe to Maria Clemm, July 7, 1849, Ostrom, Letters, p. 452). Although the subtitle of this book is" The spiritual and material universe " Poe is much more to the nature of the subject matter of the nature of spirit. Poe implication that it is separate components, however, is a strong indication of its belief that everyone has a soul that exists outside the physical body. (Kenneth Hovey makes an intriguing case for Poe, basing their views on the philosophy Epicurian the thought of the soul as composed of a kind of energy which in turn is also material, as "the highest ranking of the matter" (Hovey, "in Poe material metaphysics of man ", 1996, p. 356).) There are also clear indications that the act of creation out of nothing owes everything to an unnamed deity, but very necessary. "That the nature and the God of nature are different, not thinking that doubt is long. For the first involving only the laws of the latter. But the very idea of God, omnipotent, omniscient, entertain us, also, the idea of the infallibility of his laws. With him there is neither past nor future - with him all that now - no insult in the assumption that the artificial laws that anticipate all possible contingencies? "(Quinn, Poetry and Tales, p. 1313). So far, Poe has remained fairly conventional. His next step, however, put his feet on more dangerous ground: "... a God, self-existent and this isolation became all things at once, through force of will, while all things were thus constituted a part of God "(Quinn, Poetry Tales, p. 1314). With this statement, and others, Poe suggested that all was God and was amazed to discover that some misunderstood his ideas as blasphemous. In a long letter to CF Hoffman, in response to criticism in the literary world, Poe ends with "If these" misconceptions "... made less severe with a purpose brand that my book as "wicked" and myself as a "pantheist", a "policy", a pagan, or God knows what. . . I have allowed his dishonesty go unnoticed, through pure contempt for the childish - for the turn-down-collar-ity of tone. . . "(Poe, Charles Fenno Hoffman, September 20, 1848, Ostrom, Letters, p. 382). For Poe, who understandably felt a little cheated in this life, the idea of one or more future lives maintained obvious appeal. He used the reincarnation as a theme in several stories, but there is no reason to suppose that really believes in it as a doctrine. His quote of "Marginalia" suggests something more than traditional reincarnation "in a future existence, we will look at what we think our present existence, like a dream ..." (MST, June 1849, reprinted in Pollin, Brevities, p. 379M231). Certainly, religious views of Poe were unconventional, though it may seem much less so today, with our dizzying array of groups preaching a virtual cornucopia of spiritual possibilities. It would certainly have been understandable that Poe had lost faith in a divine hand, that directs our daily lives for the purposes of our spiritual benefit. Sad and youthful death of so many loved ones (mother, Mrs. Stanard, Frances Allan, his brother and especially the long, lingering illness of Virginia) have tested the faith of anyone. Poverty, disease and failure, certainly looked his constant companions. If we can accept the testimony of Dr. John Moran, who usually must be more than a little skepticism, Poe's last words were "Lord, help my poor soul.
