Modding Notebooks
The graphics capability of notebook computers is noticeably better than that of their early progenitors. Notebooks have become extremely customizable, to the point of being as adaptive to new generations of software as desktop computers. This is largely due to the downsizing of graphics cards and processors, and the emergence of the PCI Express platform. The presence of improved processors in notebooks has not only increased their performance but has also increased their price. Fortunately, free notebooks can be acquired on many legitimate sites on the web. To get a free notebook computer, you typically have to take a survey or join an affiliate program.
Notebook computers are flexible and portable, which is the reason that they are popular with highly mobile individuals such as college students, medical doctors, and sports trainers. Different notebooks have all different capabilities, but they can all be individually upgraded or "modded" to fit the unique needs of their users. Customization can range from anything as simple to skinning the chassis of the notebook to upgrading the cooling systems and internal mechanisms.
HP, Dell, and Sony are the most popular brands of notebook computers. While these brands may seem different on the surface, the only difference between the three computers is the level of support, warranty, and pre-installed software on each. Sony computers tend to be the most expensive, but the warranty is void the moment that a user modifies their computer. This means that doing something as basic as upgrading the graphics card in your notebook computer could void your warranty, meaning that your computer is no longer covered by the policy you pay for. Dell encourages user modding and supports the modding community but has a lack of a definitive warranty packages. HP computers are renowned for their stability and easy back-ups and reformatting software, and are probably the best choice for new users, though HP is tenacious about their warranties, and will not offer help to those who do not have a policy.
To get a good deal on cheap or free notebook computers, look around the web for sites that offer "free notebooks", and make sure to read their policies over for anything fishy. While everything comes with some sort of price, there are some really good deals out there on the net. Avoid websites that ask for your credit card number or other valuable personal information. Look for a no-spam sticker and a good privacy policy.
A free notebook computer will be just as moddable and customizable as a notebook computer purchased from a company or store directly.
Here are a few tips for cheap modding for your new free notebook computer:
- Invest in a good cooling system or cooling pad. Overheating notebooks can damage motherboards and video cards.
- When upgrading to a new video card, make sure to check what type of processor you have, and whether or not you have an integrated chipset like PCI Express, or individual video cards and motherboards.
- When skinning, make sure to use a no-stick solution or tape to help the skin stick.
- When replacing a part or adding a new part into your free notebooks, make sure to use rubber gloves or ground yourself to another object. Computers can be damaged easily by careless tinkering.
