What you should know about food miles and how do they affect the neighborhood?
One of the oft-overlooked aspect of food and the degree to which reduces the environmental impact has to do with food miles. What are "food miles", you may wonder as I did. miles food is exactly what it sounds like: the number of miles food must travel in its journey from the fields is grown until it reaches its final destination in the consumer's plate. While organic food is better for you and the environment, food miles are something that most people do not take into account.
Food Miles and Environment
The benefit to the land that offers natural practices, sustainable agriculture, including dramatic reduction of chemicals introduced in soil, water and air, are certainly important. Never hear me speak ill of any farmer who chooses an organic basis for their business, because every bit is important for the set. However, food miles are definitely a consideration if you're farming or not.
food miles have to do with costs energy associated with transporting food: most of the time non-renewable resources of petroleum-dependent our society used to it. This is directly related to the amount of carbon emissions (or carbon footprint) associated with the production of food - carbon emissions contribute directly to global warming and are extremely harmful from the point of view of the environment.
Local Agriculture
The fact is, not all organic farmers have a local market they can sell their products and organic produce, meats and dairy products are widely transported as non-organic counterparts. Consider two things:
- The amount of assets of individual organic ingredients such as vegetables, meat, dairy and eggs are available in all chains supermarkets that carry several organic compounds (and many chains do now), and whether or not it is feasible for that amount of food that consistently delivers industry local agriculture;
- The many other multi-ingredient organic products whose components vary from 70 to 100% organic
Someone is supplying all these Wal-Mart, Kroger, Publix and similar stores with organic foods. Whenever possible, I hope these stores turn to suppliers to meet local needs, however, it is unlikely that this alone is enough to store each of its organic ships. Additionally, all products several organic ingredients like peanut butter, soup, cheese and the like should have all the ingredients raw, organic transported to their places of transformation, once the finish product is then sent to the shelves of supermarkets located throughout the country.
Organic Food Miles Food Miles continue
Organic food is transported as all other foods, and build up your own fair share of food miles involved in the environmental condition and global pollution. While direct health benefits of eating organic food only in terms of environmental impact is still not enough. The solution here is to make an effort to buy locally grown organic products whenever possible to limit the creation of unnecessary food miles.

Although I commend you for your commitment to support organic and fresh foods as natural as possible, there are more steps to be taken to to ensure a more healthy, sustainable and beautiful for all of us.
