Is a LAN gaming network the same as a Normal internet connection?

Is a LAN gaming network the same as a Normal internet connection, me and my bro wanna verse each other in cod, we have a wireless internet connection but do we need to do anything else?

I haven't played cod so I don't know how the online match making system works, however LAN networks are usually done with out the internet (Otherwise you might get delay due to the information being sent half way across the globe before it returns to your bro - Note: I am refering to online play)

So to make your network a lan network you just go into your network connections and then change your IPv4 address to a private address e.g. Make yours 10.0.0.101 and your brothers 10.0.0.102
and your subnet mask should automatically set to 255.0.0.0 then your set.

Note: Remember to change your IP address's back to auto config so that you can browse the internet again afterwards.

2nd Note: Link your 2 pc's with a LAN cable I recommend
