How similar are gay male's and straight female's brains?
I was just watching Oprah. On the show Dr. Oz said that we all start out with female brains in the womb. At about 8 weeks males testes start working and 'marinate' the brain. (Their word, not mine).
I was just wondering if this could have anything to do with gay men and straight woman having similarities... mainly being attracted to men?
I am a gay man myself. I hope no one is offended. I am just trying to ask this in the simplest way.
One of my psychiatrists explained it to me like this:
The default sex is female, and while in the womb, the baby is put through a series of hormonal baths over a period of time (days or weeks I think) and each of these baths separately determine genitals, brain gender, and sexual orientation. If there is a difference in either the hormone level, or with the timing of the hormone for each bath, then a variation will occur.
I guess gay men whom are not bisexual might miss out on just one of the hormonal baths, while an anatomical female with xy chromosomes may have missed out on all of the baths. But remember that sex chromosomes, especially the SRY gene can theoretically be responsible for this phenomenon, and so 'even' from a creationists view, these people are genetically made this way and should not be viewed as less legitimate than a typical straight person.
So yes, Oprah is right sweety.
Edit: The reason why males usually have XY chromosomes is because of the SRY gene which usually resides on the Y chromosome. XY or XX doesn't always determine sex. Some men have XX chromosomes and vica verca. See the link below about an experiment with this on rats.
