0.25 miles wireless

I'm trying to connect a friend with no hope of broadband to a neighbor 0.25 of a mile away. I can get a line of sight if I put a flag pole up to approx. 30 feet. I have a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT and 2.4 20 dBi Yagi antenna around, so would like to use when going to work. The router has to be inside, so I'm wondering if I have enough power to reach the cable and antenna? I also wonder if you can get without any antenna the house of reception (only wifi cards in laptops)? You can add antenna or whatever is needed, but wants it to be the lowest cost possible. Any suggestions appreciated.

I think the answer to this is exactly what you mean by "low cost?" Lower cost of only cat5e cable run from home to other (which is at least theoretically possible, 150 meters, 100 meters, but my rule of thumb for max cable run without repeaters)? The "correct" to do is get a pair of unidirectional antennas and a wireless bridge to the other house. You still need a couple unidirectional antenna. The focus and amplification signal of your wireless router (base transceiver like a walkie-talkie or CB radio) to its neighbor is half the problem. Focus and amplify the signals back to you (Because they have a "walkie-talkie", too) is the other half. It is no use if they can hear clearly if you can not hear well. Some of the Cantenna articles seem to suggest otherwise, however. It will cost you try to do this with a single antenna unidirectional. I do not see it working. This is telling me that certainly can be done about the range you're talking about. The question is, "How much?" Just a word about the distance of the signal WRT54GL. I've owned or used a pair of WRT54G models (before the "L" version came out) and distance was significantly lower than the Netgear models, or even new Linksys models. Now I have a Linksys WRT160N and I would estimate based on my test run-around-the house- which is approximately twice the signal strength of the Linksys SRX 400 it replaces, which itself was stronger than the WRT54G it replaced. The bottom line is that you can do better with a different wireless router.
